Creating your “look”
I have chosen to use the above photo as I think you can see really clearly each element in this particular stage look but creating the right stage look for YOU as an individual is really important.
If you have read (if not I highly recommend you do) my first timers cheat sheet guide (it’s free on the website) I go into far more detail breaking down looks for bikini, figure, wellness and fit model but its all about creating a look for you.
Now in this section i’m going to generalise divisions a bit but the same main rules will always apply regardless of class. The main rule being to create a look that compliments the physique and not too much distraction on stage with your hair, makeup, jewellery and suit that you take away from the physique itself we want each element to complement each other without looking too busy and distracting.
Start with the suit, in my opinion the suit as well as being the most expensive part is also the biggest element to the look, it dosen’t matter what colours the pros are wearing and you are not marked on the colour itself so pick something that you love and complements your skin tone and hair colour. Anyone who has followed me long enough will know I have always had a blue shade of suit, why? Because blue suits me best the suit above is my particular favourite it was a lighter shade to that I wore previous but my hair was also a lighter and slightly icier blond too, I know pink also really complements me but I didnt want a pink suit as I felt with blond hair I would look like barbie, some girls love that but for me its just not my personality and that needs to shine through on your look. However adding pinky tones to the suit matches the pink undertones that I have in my skin (think when you buy foundation).
If you’re stuck on colour look whats in your wardrobe, is it full of pinks or blues or reds or darker colours like black and burgundy? there is no right or wrong in choosing suit colour its just what makes you feel the most you.
Connectors, dependant on federation depends what connectors I would be going for, more bodybuilding feds like PCA, IFBB etc I would go for simple 1-3 row connectors while feds like pure elite or glifting you could go for more patterned connectors and centre connectors. If you have a petite frame I would look at using a one row connector where as if you are less petite like myself you could use 2 row or potentially 3 row, bigger connectors can overwhelm a smaller frame but equally a small connector can get lost in someone with a bigger frame.
Hair is the next thing I would be looking at and this can change from show to show but adds to what earrings will look best with that hair style. if you are doing most UK feds it dosent matter if it is up or down curly or straight as long as it suits you. However if you are doing IFBB or OCB bikini or fit model or Wellness in any fed your hair covers your back in your back pose so this is super important, the hair must be long enough to cover the back WITHOUT covering or touching the glutes you should just be able to see the waist from the back, if your hair is slightly on the shorter side I would suggest extensions or straight hair to keep it long enough to cover. If your hair is on the longer side I would suggest curling it to bring it up the back more. If you have afro hair and need the back covered, braids, curls and wigs are all popular choices, with the same concept applying in length, if you do not need your back covered again it is completely up to you go for a style you love. Hair colour is always preferred in natural tones think blond, brown, black or auburn, bright blues or pink etc hair can become distracting.
Heels I would look at next, you know the style you want (same as your practice ones, Lip, cocktail etc) so have a look on KOMPAK and see what designs they do for that style, plain heels always add a touch of elegance, and I’m really loving the diamonds inside the shoes too also look if your bikini and connectors have AB or silver diamanté as this will play a role in what sparkle will look best too. full diamanté heels can look incredible but only with some suit colours just because everything can have tons of sparkle on dosen’t mean it should remember we dont want to distract from the physique. A show day pair of heels is a must though separate from a practice pair these will be far cleaner, and free of scratches missing gems and dirt and therefore present a far more polished look on stage.
Jewellery, always measure from your ear lobe to your shoulder, why? because we don’t want any earring sitting on top of that beautiful delt and hiding it on the KOMPAK website each earring has a measurement in cm so make sure that is smaller than the measurement from your earlobe to your shoulder to avoid this. then choose your earrings based on your hair if you are having big curly hair you can wear bigger earring so they not get lost if your having straight hair straighter earrings will complement this too. short hair, shorter earrings will look best but there is a style for everyone and you can swap jewellery around to change your look up along with your hair while keeping cost down. Bracelets and rings again look at what you like don’t overload your wrists if you are petite and get lost in it. I do think wellness girls can wear slightly heavier bracelet styles to help the upper appear smaller. think also what sides you pose on where you want to place this jewellery. You can wear ‘personal’ jewellery as well as your ‘stage’ jewellery as long as its in keeping with the colour this can help have something special with you on stage. You can see in this photo on my ring finger I have a silver ring from my Grandma I wore on stage and some people choose to wear their engagement and wedding rings, just be aware though that you are wearing tan so they may need a good clean after.
The final piece is make up, dependant on fed and class would slightly depend on how I would do my makeup. If you are not 100% with make up I would get a professional to do it though. With feds like PCA I feel like you can really play with make up and have fun with bolder colours, match your suit or tones in it or go for a strong dark smokey eye its completely your choice in what makes you feel good. I do think federations like IFBB prefer a more natural look in bikini, wellness and fit model think browns, silvers, light pinks and champagnes where as figure, WPD and bodybuilding women can play around a little with more colour and bolder statements. your face should be a couple shades lighter than your tan but be blended in so I would advise carrying a beauty blender incase you need it.
The most important bit though is truly to choose what you feel yourself with, choosing your look should complement your physique but equally it should showcase your personality on stage as the main goal. Have fun and be YOU!
