Am I good enough?
I think every single person that has started a bodybuilding prep has thought this at some point in their journey, probably multiple points within their journey so if your sat reading this then know you are defiantly not alone in your thoughts.
In a world full of social media and having the next big thing thrown in your face consistently its not surprise you doubt yourself and think maybe your not quite there or that you wont ever be. I’m sure you have all heard it before but social media is all a highlight reel, you wouldnt go on their an post some god awful photo of yourself where you havent slept had your morning coffee and your hair looks like a birds nest would you? so what makes you think anyone else is doing that? They are all posing their best bits, with the best lighting the camera angle at the most flattering and their strongest pose, sprinkle that with a good filter and maybe a touch of photoshop and you have the perfect insecurity inducing post, and these posts get pushed! why? because insucurity sells!
Think about it, you see ads of beautiful women wearing the latest MK watch, click on your stories and there it is again this stunning watch pushed in your face again and again you look down at your wrist and you are wearing a pretty one from next but what do you do? you compare the two watches realise you like the MK one better and click add to cart…. The insecurity of marketing and social media has got you again there was nothing wrong with your watch, it still told you the time and looked nice but now you have spent money on a new one.
So let’s take a step back… why do you feel not good enough? are you comparing yourself to the girls on the Olympia stage who have been doing this 15+ years and this is your first ever show? possibly. Or it might even be something more deep rooted than that.
But the real reason you feel like this a lot of the time is simply because you care! you have put the last few years into this journey, tracked your food done your steps and cardio pushed hard in your weight sessions you don’t want it all to be for nothing. You want to get that trophy at the end of it, prove it was all worth it.
But what if we look at it from different angle and look at it as your own personal self project and enjoyment in that. you love training right? you probably wouldn’t be reading this newsletter if you weren't. You love keeping yourself healthy and fuelled with your nutrition? and you love the challenge of competing or prepping for a photoshoot? I know without knowing exactly who is reading this the answer to all of the above is yes. So therefore my answer is this…
Everyone no matter how long they have been in the sport, how many titles they have won, all have moments of self doubt and asking if they are really good enough, you are not alone! Step back from the business of social media and what other people are doing and have focus on you, spend some time each day in positive self reflection what things have you done well and what things have you done which are taking you to a better version of you, how far have you come? I think this is a super powerful tool to be able to use then no matter what happens come show day you know you are proud of yourself and the journey you have been on, everything on top of that is just a bonus.
